I’m not sure what’s going on exactly, but I have to say that I’m less than thrilled with some of the recent comments – especially by so-called “Melanie Griffith” – on my blog. For some reason, the post on Donnie Darko is drawing a lot of attention – some of it fine, but some of it just plain rude and inappropriate.

So, I’m closing comments on that entry and banning the IP of the moron who thinks dropping the f-bomb nine times in a post is amusing (which, I’m sure, is likely to do nothing except annoy regular earthlink or aol users, if the offending jerk was using regular dial-up … oh well) … If any regular users suddenly find their IP banned, feel free to e-mail me.

I’d noticed that earlier, and I’m getting something equally strange in my comments on Animatrix, which attracted a sudden burst of attention.

I’ve noticed that some bloggers have a comments policy (Rana at Frogs and Ravens asks that writers not use profanity, etc), and I have mixed feelings about any kind of policy, but when something strange happens on “your” space it’s a bit disconcerting…

As someone who swears a lot in everyday speech, I tend to avoid judging others on that matter, but I think that *civility* in commenting is a must.

On a lighter note, someone calling him/herself The Boss occasionally leaves complete Springsteen lyrics as comments on my site 😉

Now that is spam I wouldn’t mind 🙂 Who can argue with The Boss?

And as far as swearing goes, I don’t much mind generally. I’m certainly no angel in that regard (or any, for that matter). But if you take a look at the “offending” comment, you’ll see that it served no purpose other to, well, offend.

I was offering Frogs and Ravens as an example only. I’m not offended by profanity in general, and yeah, Jason’s case was extreme.

  5. Rana says:

Just so you know, I’m not against _all_ profanity, but only that which is inappropriate. I’m more in favor of using the _best_ word available — sometimes it’s a “rude” one, sometimes it is not.

  6. Jason says:

    Agreed Rana.

Case in point, the comment in question probably did not need F**k 9 times in a two sentence paragraph.

I suspect now, however, that it was just a spammer. Who knows…?
