{"id":215,"date":"2003-12-15T16:18:03","date_gmt":"2003-12-15T21:18:03","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/misc.wordherders.net\/?p=215"},"modified":"2003-12-15T16:18:03","modified_gmt":"2003-12-15T21:18:03","slug":"journey-to-wild-divine","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"http:\/\/misc.wordherders.net\/?p=215","title":{"rendered":"Journey to Wild Divine"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>Like <a href=\"http:\/\/huminf.uib.no\/~jill\/archives\/games\/moodaltering.html\">Jill<\/a>, I&#8217;m fascinated by the idea behind <a href=\"http:\/\/www.wilddivine.com\/content.php?cont_id=1\">The Journey to Wild Divine <\/a> game, an &#8220;Inner-Active&#8221; computer game, which uses biofeedback rings as a central user interface.<\/p>\n<p>In my dissertation work, I&#8217;m working towards an examination of embodied computing in gaming that broadens the reach of the avatar beyond a simple sprite-representation on the screen.  You can find some other posts along these lines in the category <a href=\"http:\/\/misc.wordherders.net\/archives\/cat_ergonomics.html\">ergonomics<\/a>, which is the broad term I use to discuss game hardware and HCI &#8212; see the 6th paragraph of <a href=\"http:\/\/misc.wordherders.net\/archives\/000151.html\">this post<\/a> if you want a brief description, or see my <a href=\"http:\/\/www.gamesconference.org\/2003\/index.php?Abstracts\/Rhody\">Level Up proposal<\/a>, which was accepted (unfortunately, a limited travel budget hindered my ability to attend).<\/p>\n<p>I&#8217;d really like to experiment with this (and the <a href=\"http:\/\/misc.wordherders.net\/archives\/000146.html\">P5 glove<\/a> and PS2 Eyetoy) for my dissertation, but it&#8217;s just not in the family budget.  Has anyone ever had success in requesting &#8216;review copies&#8217; of game material for dissertation work?  It sure would be nice if I could check it out from the library&#8230;<\/p>\n<p>EDIT:<br \/>\nAlso check out <a href=\"http:\/\/www.abc.net.au\/news\/newsitems\/s1005979.htm\">this article<\/a>, which briefly describes how researchers manipulated users&#8217; bodies by sending small electric currents to alter the balance of the inner ear.
